As the long-term operator of the 495 and 95 Express Lanes in Northern Virginia, Transurban is committed to the environment, safety and wellbeing of the communities in which we operate. We strive to be good neighbours and long-term partners in the region, and we continually seek opportunities to respond to the needs of local neighbourhoods and organizations located near the Express Lanes corridor.

Transurban is committed to the partnerships we make with governments, businesses and communities, and it is our mission to bring long-term transportation improvements to these communities.

As part of this commitment, we have developed community initiatives to support the wellbeing and safety of the communities in which we operate.

Express Lanes Community Grant Program

The Express Lanes Community Grant Program supports organizations that sustain, enhance or protect the local environment and communities surrounding the Express Lanes corridor. Each quarter, Transurban awards grants to local organizations, such as schools, communities and environmental organizations. Through the program, we have supported initiatives including community landscaping, vegetable gardens, housing programs, clinics, and youth outreach and educational programs. Since the launch of the Grant Program in 2008, Transurban has awarded more than $640,000 to support local projects and community programs.

Please visit the Express Lanes website for more information on the Grant Program.

Employee Community Engagement

Transurban recognizes the importance of including our employees in our community engagement effort. Transurban employees play an active, hands-on role in the community, committing volunteer time and serving on community boards.

Each year in Virginia, Transurban hosts a Volunteer Day, during which employees volunteer at a local non-profit organization. Volunteer Day is about demonstrating Transurban’s core values – integrity, collaboration, accountability, ingenuity and respect – by working together to make a difference. It’s a great opportunity for employees to take part in a day of volunteering in giving back to our local community.

In addition, every spring, employees volunteer at Bike to Work Day, the D.C. area’s annual event celebrating cycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. During the event employees join many other local businesses handing out refreshments and giveaways to cyclists while they also answer questions about the Express Lanes.
